Not very inappropriate / Good for kids
Honestly I think it’s fine for younger ages. Anything inappropriate I feel like a small child wouldn’t understand and/or repeat it. Yes it is a little violent but it is also really wholesome and sweet. And there IS a gay couple but that’s not specifically inappropriate for most. Although if you read the graphic novel first, I will let you know it is pretty different from the movie. Same old characters, but different storyline entirely. Overall a very good movie, 5/5 stars, would watch again!

Not for young audience
Good movie but some suggestive language that kids wouldn’t get and were confused why she said “little cold in here” and looked down in the beginning. Good storyline and great animations. Would not recommend to young children despite its PG rating.

Inappropriate for young kids
One of the lead characters is named Ambrosios Goldenloin. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Specific age range depends on the kid, but most mid-older range young kids should be fine
Minus a few jokes that don't land (for me, a 19 year old, not a target demographic), this movie was amazing, even more so than I had expected (being a triumph that it even got released)For the sake of this site I'll say Bal is a pretty great role model, and learns through his journey from his experiences and time with Nimona that systems are flawed and can't just be fixed by outing one bad person at the top. Like, this movie goes surprisingly deep into some anti-establishment/authority themes in a great way which really works and shows the impacts of hate-media, specifically on marginalised groups - primarily classism with Bal being a common man getting his chance at being a knight taken away from him, along with plenty of allegorical subtext with Nimona's character. Won't get spoilery though.Movie will probably make you cry tbh

A masterpiece of animation with messages on today’s societal issues.
One of the best movies I’ve ever seen, although I do feel like it’s on the edge between PG and PG-13. I will say most of Nimona is pretty family friendly, but a few things to keep in mind: (Minor Spoilers)A lot of fighting throughout, with a couple deaths and loss of limb. There is a little blood in one or two scenes, but nothing graphic. The main one in my opinion is that it depicts how emotional trauma and depression can affect someone (rather accurately, I might add) as the film progresses, even touching on suicidal thoughts. The climax has a few tearjerking scenes that are almost painful to watch, so be prepared to cry.All in all, Nimona is a great movie. There are several tender moments between the two main characters which highlight some of its best themes: learning to accept and love everyone, and the potential consequences of systemic fear and hatred of those who are different.

Funnier and more fun to watch than I expected, with very positive inclusivity and lgbT representation
My daughter loved this movie, and her dad and I both really enjoyed watching it with her. Some aspects of the plot are a little predictable, but there are some delightful surprises in the writing and drawing. The humor is excellent, and so is the action. Nimona is a kick-butt hero/ine ("Now you're a boy?!" "I'm a boy *today*") and the voice acting is terrific. The romance is bland and fairly peripheral; only notable because the movie doesn't make a huge meal out of it being a male-male pairing. I really like that romance and infatuation isn't a driving plot element, which I don't consider good modeling. I *love* that this movie provides trans representation, even though it's subtle enough to be overlooked. Some other reviewers have expressed concern that there is an element of self-harm ideation--I feel that this is outweighed by Nimona's relentless efforts to be seen for who she is, and by the fact that avoiding a scary topic doesn't make it go away. Particularly given the prevalence suicidality among teens and especially the trans population, a movie like this is a chance to unpack some important topics with kids.

Interesting, fun, and great conversation starter!
Our youngest daughter (a mature 7,) thoroughly enjoyed this movie, as did I. She was confused about the shape-shifting, but once she understood that it was Nimona, she was able to engage. We try and talk about hard things (suicide, feeling like an outcast, not knowing who to believe) in age appropriate terms, so we had a lot to talk about with this film. Our kids are aware of what's happening and experience a full range of feelings; I'm grateful when art helps to bring up these topics so we can talk about them. As a parent, it was refreshing to find a character as complex and interesting as Nimona. Bal's relationship with Ambrosius is also really complicated and I appreciated that. I think it's ridiculous that some parent are tripping over the "gay kiss." Finally, my biggest concern was the lack of context around the world-so I guess I'll have to read the graphic novel!

A meaningful story for any age, but some content for families to subjectively gauge
Big picture goal of this story is to not teach young kids to judge others who are different at a young age. Frankly, it seemed educational for kids and adults alike. The art and storyline were surprising, delightful, laugh-out-loud and emotionally compelling.I think the age limit of this particular movie will rely on family's and their subjective preferences. There's a lot of fighting, but we personally did not find it too extreme (my kiddo is 10 and she looooved this movie). There is a hint of a lead character not valuing themselves and potentially self-harming that another reviewer mentioned. This was the part I was most concerned with, but I thought it was handled really, really well, but that should be factored in terms of whether a parent wants their child to watch the movie.Otherwise, the story is rebellious in the healthiest of ways, and the story was poignant. One of our recent favorites and hope they make more like this!

Save it for the older kids
Definitely not for younger children. The animation is interesting but not super unique. I appreciate that it was made from a graphic novel which should be a sign that it is for the “big kid” crowd. The main character is quirky and strong and her peers are really cool. The language and storyline though feels a bit mature , and maybe more applicable to the older kid crowd.

Fantastic Thrill Ride
11-year-old and I absolutely loved it! Lots of action, great messages, brilliant animation sequences, and a fun soundtrack. 8-year-old thought it would be scary so he didn’t watch it with us, and I think he was right that the “monster” would have been too scary for him.

Beautiful, funny, engaging, inclusive film
Our family really enjoyed this movie. It’s engaging and full of heart and humor. We’re all neurodivergent and my kids really seemed to see themselves in Nimona. My youngest even said she thinks the movie is about autism (she was captivated by it, especially Nimona’s big expressions of hurt and anger near the end). I’m grateful for this meaningful, powerful and inclusive film ❤️
